The Mysteries of Ayurvedic Medicine and Ayurvedic Herbs

ayurvedic herbsAyurvedic medicine is a method of health care that is native to India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It was in existence many years before Buddha. Ayurveda can be loosely translated to mean the knowledge of/for long life. The eight major branches of Ayurveda mirrors the main specialties in American medicine: Internal medicine, Surgery, Ear-Eyes-Nose and Throat, Pediatrics, Toxicology, Purification of the Genetic Organs, Health and Longevity, and Spiritual Healing/Psychiatry. Many of the Ayurvedic herbs can be used to treat more than one system or illness. Ayurveda believes that materials that have Ayuervedic herb, animal, and mineral origins have various forms of healing and medicinal value.

Forms of Ayurvedic Medicine

This type of herbal medicine can take several forms. Each of the forms has a name in Sanskrit. Their English meanings are given here. The forms can include: fresh juice of herbs, tea of herbs, fine powdered herbs that are cooked in special oils, crushed herbs, herbs that are cooked in clarified butter, a light wine that is made by fermenting herbs, a distillate of herbs, ashes, and innumerable mixtures of herbs, minerals, and animal ingredients. Many of the Ayurvedic herbs can be used to treat multiple illnesses. The illness and body part being treated determine the form and combination of ingredients to be used.
