Chen pi, also referred to as bitter orange peel, is the peel of the the mandarine orange or tangarine. When it's being used as an herbal remedy, the peelings are cut into large portions and dried out. You can identify bitter orange peel because of its red color and its pliable, oily feel when you touch it. The peel is at first sweet tasting, but watch out for its biting aftertaste, because it quickly becomes bitter and even pungent.
This folk remedy is an allergy and digestive system tonic. Alleviating allergic reactions and soothing an upset stomach would be beneficial enough to your health to make this herbal remedy worth taking, but this versatile herb is also very good for your heart. It contains compounds that work together to revitalize the heart and strengthen its output. Not only is it beneficial for your heart, it also contains additional compounds that work as a contraceptive for women.
Let's take a look at some specific conditions this herb is useful for.
Allergies - This herb is considered an allergy tonic in traditional chinese medicine. Not only can you use the peeling of the bitter orange to fend off allergic reactions, but you can use the mandarin orige itself for the purpose of easing your allergy symptoms.
Upset stomach, diarrhea, indigestion, peptic ulcers, nausea - If you make the herb into a tea, it's been shown to be a tonic to your digestive system as well. It works to sooth your digestive tract by relaxing your body's smooth muscle tissues such as those found in your intestinal walls.
Typically, you can prepare chen pi into a tea and it's said to claer your allergies right up. You can also make the herb into a tincture. I do have one word of caution though. According tp traditional chinese medicine, you shouldn't use this herb if you have redness of the tongue or face, and suffer symptoms of cough or fever.
Women who are pregnant or mestruating should be cautious when using this herb also. Smaller amounts of it will diminish contractions in your uterus and intestinal walls, while larger amounts of the herb seem to have the opposite effect.
Biter orange peel, or chen pi, as it's commonly referred to in China has been prized for thousands of years in traditional chinese medicine because of its medicinal benefits. Namely, its ability to alleviate alleric reactions and the soothing effect it has on nausea and stomach upset. It's also said to strngthen the heart. So, take heart if you're a frequent allergy sufferer, bitter orange peel could be the natural remedy you've been looking for.
