Comfrey - A Versatile Herb

comfreyComfrey has many uses throughout the world. To some it is the greatest of garden plants, easily grown without overgrowing, and to others the possible ending of the worlds suffering. With its many species and wide spread sale across national borders, it is nearly a world-wide herb.

Uses As An Herbal Remedy

The Russian species is the one most commonly used in herbal medicines. Some believe that Russian variety and garlic could end half of the worlds ailments. This herb used to be known as knitbone for an obvious reason, it was used to treat broken bones. It contains allantoin which helps cells reproduce. The increased cell reproduction helps the body to repair itself quicker. This herb has been used to treat bronchial problems, broken bones, sprains, arthritis, gastric and varicose ulcers, burns, acne, and other skin conditions. When in a tea form it is used to treat diarrhea. One detraction is that prolonged use in high doses can lead to liver disease because of the natural pyrolizidine alkaloids. There has been numerous studies done to prove, disprove, this belief. It has been found that the risk of liver damage depends on the dose and frequency of ingestion. The part of the plant used also affects the test results.

Available Forms

In the U.S. and most European countries the oral form of this plant has been banned, but topical preparations are still in use. Comfrey ointments, creams, poultices, and liniments are made from the fresh or dried herb, leaf or root of the plant.

This plant, in its many forms, has been used for over 2000 years. In spite of the suspected threat of liver disease, many people still use the oral form of this plant for innumerable ailments. The topical uses revolve around its ability to reduce swelling and stimulate cell reproduction. It is commonly thought to be a cure all from heaven.
