For centuries, particularly before the advent of pharmaceutical manufacturing, countless women have turned to nature's remedies for women's ailments. Now backed by scientific studies, a lot of these herbal remedies are regaining their popularity across the globe.

Herbal Remedies for Women - Problems related to menstruation

Menstruation causes monthly discomforts for most women. Perhaps the most common complaint during this time of the month is menstrual cramps. Red raspberry leaves, considered to be one of the most universal herbal remedies for a woman, are a common preventive cure for these painful cramps, among other things. Often taken as a tea, raspberry leaves have substances that soothe the uterus to keep it from cramping. At the same time it can control excessive bleeding, especially during the first two days of a woman's period. Other herbal remedies for women's menstrual cramps are wild yam, black cohosh and chamomile.

Bloating and water retention are also familiar problems. Diuretic herbs like angelica, horsetail, hydrangea, and parsley can help prevent bloating. For hormonal imbalance that causes skin blemishes, breast tenderness, irritability, and other symptoms of premenstrual syndrome or PMS, Chinese angelica, also known as dong quai, is a very effective solution. However, Chinese angelica should be taken days before your menstruation and should be stopped immediately once it starts. It's also not recommended to pregnant women who have a tendency to bleed profusely. Borage, black currant and evening primrose are also herbal remedies for menstruating women.

Herbal Remedies for Women - Pregnancy and lactation

Raspberry leaves likewise have properties that are beneficial for pregnancy. First of all, it is known to increase a woman's chances of getting pregnant. If you take it or drink its tea during your pregnancy, it can also prevent anemia, help you avoid spotting, and keep morning sickness away. Labor pains, bleeding and swelling of the uterus are said to be minimized too with regular intake. It can increase the quality of colostrum but at the same time, it shouldn't be taken after giving birth because it can reduce mother's milk. Vitex berry is recommended instead for nursing moms.

Herbal Remedies for Women – Menopause

Unstable hormonal changes during menopause can cause so many discomforts like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and moodiness or anxiety. Estrogen decrease can also cause heart disease and osteoporosis in women. Phytoestrogens or estrogen-like substances found in plants are good herbal remedies for women going through this phase in life. Herbals rich in phytoestrogens are soybean products, black cohosh, licorice, red clover, and alfalfa. Whole grains, flax and legumes are particularly rich in lignans that have the same effect as phytoestrogens. Vaginal dryness, in particular, can be relieved by aloe vera, calendula, and vitamins A and E.
