Valerian Root for a Good Night's Sleep

Valerian root, also called valariana officinalis has been used medicinally since the time of Hippocrates for its sedative properties. People are always looking for better, healthier ways of getting a good night's sleep. Indeed, one of the most common ailments that many people suffer with is insomnia. While there are many over the counter medications available as well as prescribed medications to treat insomnia,this herb is a good natural alternative to help you get the rest you need.

What is Valerian Root?

With its sweet smelling white or pink flowers, this herb is a strong perennial plant that flowers. Its name is Latin for “to be strong or healthy”. This translation is mainly seen where its medicinal uses come in handy. This plant was originally found in South Africa and also in parts of Asia. Later it was introduced to North America. This plant was used by Ancient Greeks for many different medical issues such as liver problems, a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection), nausea, insomnia and digestive ailments. It is also said that Valerian Root was also used for nervous disorders, epilepsy, nervousness, hysteria and even as a diuretic.

Uses for Valerian

There are many different uses for this natural root. It was used in Germany to treat children who misbehaved all the time. It was also used as a substitute for coffee by the women of Germany. In the medieval times, it was used mainly as a condiment and then as a perfume when the 16th Century came about. Perhaps one of the most common uses of Valerian Root today is as a sedative. It has been said that it will work well for those with epilepsy but there are no scientific research efforts to back this finding up.

Other Health Benefits of Valerian Root

This herb is useful for treating a variety of other health concerns as well. It is said to improve circulation, ease the symptoms of a headache, and improve menstrual issues too. But its especially helpful for two health conditions in particular other than insomnia.

Indigestion - This herb has a relaxing effect on the muscles in the digestive tract, so it can relieve issues related to indigestion, constipation, and stomach cramps.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Naturopaths often give this herb to patients suffering from IBS because it has compounds that can relieve spasms in the colon.

Basic Preparation

Many people will tell you that the volatile oil that is found in this root is very pungent, much like aged milk or even cheese. One of the most common methods of preparation is by using it as a tea. You need to use caution when making the tea as it is not recommended that you use boiling water with it as it will ruin the lighter oils. It is also made into a dietary supplement where it can be taken in the form of a capsule or a tablet.

Common Side Effects

Valerian root is classified with The American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) as a class 1 in the safety rating scale. This means that it is considered a safe herb and can be used with a wide dosage range. There are some people that do complain that they have the opposite reaction with this root. Instead of feeling sedated they feel nervous, restless and anxious. If you suffer with insomnia, then you may want to look into an alternative treatment such as this natural root. Use caution when first trying this herb until you know how your body will react to it. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any type of herbal treatment on your own.
